The International Class Program of the Faculty of Law at Syiah Kuala University sent their first delegation to the world’s largest competition, the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition
On January 27, 2024, students from the International Class Program of Syiah Kuala University’s Law Faculty participated in the world’s largest Moot Court competition, which over 700 law schools from 100 countries worldwide taking part.
The participation of Syiah Kuala University’s Law Faculty students marked the first time in history, as the competition has been running for 64 years. In brief, Jessup is the world’s largest moot court competition. The Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. One team is allowed to participate from every eligible school. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case.
The team representing the International Class Program comprised five outstanding students, namely:
- Yanma Aditya Pratama
- Aliya Chairunnisa
- Ariq Taqi Rana
- Muhammad Ariq Rifqi
- Fatin Humayra Zulfa Ishadamy
They had prepared themselves for a full five months to compete in this event, considering it is the largest competition in the world and entails significant difficulty levels. Notably, the competition participation from Harvard University, Stanford University, and other leading universities worldwide.
During the regional stage of the competition, the USK team defeated others in the third round, with a score of 659 against their opponents’ 644. This achievement was remarkable for a novice team, given the competition’s formidable nature.
Throughout the documentation process and the competition, the USK team received full guidance from M. Ya’kub Aiyub Kadir, S.Ag., L.L.M., Ph.D, Lena Farsia, S.H., M.H.LLM, Aditya Rivaldi, S.H., LL.M, and full support from the Dean and Vice Dean 3, namely Dr. M. Gaussyah, S.H., M.H and Syamsul Bahri, SHI, MA.
It is hoped that the involvement of students from the International CLass Program of Syiah Kuala University’s Law Faculty in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition will serve as a valuable experience and enhance the quality of the faculty’s teams in future participation in similar competitions.
